My first experience using noise therapy with animals was when I was in college and working at a boarding kennel. For the first few years I was there, we would leave the radio on overnight for the dogs. Then, one day, someone sent us a CD of songs composed specifically to help dogs relax.

From that point on, we would play the CD on repeat every night. It had a clear effect on the dogs. The second we turned it on, the barkers would settle down and, in the morning, the building was always quiet when we talked in.

The battery is also very impressive. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to charge and will run over 4 hours on a single charge. My unit has always lasted through the night and well into the morning.

Like most cats, my one-year-old Domestic Shorthair, Makoa, is a comfort hound. Because of that, I knew he would make a great reviewer for Verlo’s Pet Beds. Makoa knows what he likes and how to tell you if he’s unhappy.

Luckily, Verlo makes it easy to get your discerning pet exactly what they desire when it comes to a pet bed. You get to choose your size, the materials that go into the bed, including cooling gel and memory foam, and the type of fabric used in the cover.

For Makoa, I opted for a small bed from their V5 line with a memory foam topper and textured cover meant to help increase airflow. All these beds come with a washable top cover and waterproof inner cover, a must for all pet beds, in my opinion.

Once the box arrived, I took out the vacuum-sealed bed-burrito, cut the plastic off, and set it out to let it puff back up to full size. After about twenty minutes, it was ready for testing. And that’s exactly how long it took Makoa to find it and claim it as his own.

What We Liked

From the moment this bed came out of the plastic wrap, I could tell it was a quality product. The cover is very well made with attention to detail. The textured pattern top is not only functional to help with airflow, but it is super cute and much more interesting to look at than what pet beds typically offer.

The diamond stitching on the sides added another level of detail and beauty. I was also a big fan of the color. The metallic blue on the sides perfectly matches my decor and the gray and white top has a nice neutral feel.

The zippers, which are smartly located on the bottom of the bed, are also well-made. The top cover features a full 360-degree zipper that makes it super easy to take the bed apart. It’s safe to say that I like this pet bed, but what about Makoa?

The instant this bed was ready to use, Makoa was all over it. He hopped up, plopped down, and didn’t move for hours. In fact, he only left because my Chihuahua tried to claim the bed as his.

The memory foam topper I opted for gives the bed a squishy feel with just enough give to cradle those kitty joints. I can see it being a great option for both cats like Makoa who love soft things and for older cats who need joint support. It is definitely softer than it is firm, but for cats, I see this as a major plus.

Where We Saw Room for Improvement

Makoa loves resting on this bed throughout the day. He usually lays on it with his paws tucked under and his head up, in that half-asleep position cats often use when keeping an eye on things. I moved the bed to his sleeping room at night and set it next to his normal sunken, round cat bed to see which he liked more.

After checking the pet cam in the morning, I learned that he used his round bed most of the night. This was a surprise because that old bed is not nearly as soft as this one. I think, in this case, the natural instinct to curl up won out over his craving for comfiness.

If Verlo could make a round pet bed with bolstered sides, I’m certain they’d win the battle for kitty hearts everywhere.

I’ve tested a number of automatic litter boxes in my time. I’ve seen many wonderful features that make life with unpredictable kitties a little easier. But for the most part, I have been underwhelmed by the odor control these high-tech litter boxes offer.

That may be why the PETKIT Purobot Ultra took me by surprise. I’ve been using this new box for the last six weeks and have yet to smell even a hint of kitty litter. And that’s saying something because my cat, Makoa, is pretty famous for clearing the house with his stinky stools.

Yep, this litter box certainly has a lot to love, but there are also a few places where I see room for improvement.

What I Liked

This box has so many awesome features and functions, but topping my list of things to love is the odor control. I am all about natural litter without added chemicals or fragrances, which means odor control responsibilities in my house fall to litter box management.

Luckily, this box does all that managing itself. It automatically scoops the litter after each use, pushing the clumps of urine and feces into a special waste-bag-lined compartment that is sealed to trap 97.5% of odors. The housing over this compartment and the N60 odor-eliminating block inside remove the remaining odors.

Waste continues to collect in the waste bag until it fills up. The website says it can hold up to 20 days of waste for a single cat. I found that mine fills up about every 16 days or so, but that still translates to very little work on the part of the cat owner.

Once the waste bag is full, you have to initiate packing, which is as easy as pressing a button. The litter box seals the bag all by itself, which means, again, no smells escape. All you have to do is remove the bag and toss it in the trash.

Beyond odor control, this smart litter box has many features.

The attached camera records your cat while they use the bathroom and can be accessed live, swiveling 210 degrees so you can watch your kitty anytime they are near the box. Since my cat sleeps in the same room as his litter box, this has been a super useful feature.

In addition to tracking when and how long your cat uses the litter box, the camera also records the waste as it goes into the waste compartment. This is a huge benefit over most other automatic litter boxes that push clumps out of sight without giving you an opportunity to check for issues. With the PETKIT Purobot Ultra, you can go back and review every potty break to check for diarrhea and other stool and urine issues that might indicate a health problem.

These features helped me identify a period of constipation Makoa was experiencing and get him some relief.

The camera also features facial recognition. This, along with the weight sensors, helps track the potty habits of each cat in multi-cat households, even when they are similar in size.

All this potty data is compiled to track changes in average potty duration, potty times per day, and pet weight. Fluctuations in these metrics can help you identify potential health issues, including kidney stones, kidney disease, constipation, blockages, and more.

Personally, I rely on this data to track potential issues with Makoa’s pica. He has eaten inedible objects in the past that required surgery to remove. By tracking his bathroom habits, I get an early warning about potential blockages so I can take him to the vet before critical issues arise.

Where I Saw Room for Improvement

I have encountered very few issues with this cat box, but there are a couple of areas where I see room for improvement.

Like most cylindrical cat boxes, this one is difficult to fill with litter. You can’t just pour the litter straight from the box because the opening is too narrow.

I’ve had to resort to pouring the fresh litter into a small bowl and then dumping it in. Alternatively, you could pull the cylinder off, tip it up, and pour straight from the box.

The PETKIT Purobot Ultra also doesn’t provide any reminders or warnings about low litter levels. This means you have to track it yourself. This isn’t a big deal, but given how hands-off this litter box is, it can be easy to forget it even exists.

The app associated with this smart litter box is fairly intuitive, but it can take some time to find the many functions. And unlocking all those functions requires a subscription.

If you want all the advanced health trackers, you’ll need to pay a monthly fee. There are enough perks with the Premium and Premium+ subscriptions that I think they’re worth it if you have concerns about your cat’s health or potty habits. PETKIT also offers a cheaper Basic subscription and a free version.

I’ve tried the free and the Premium+ options. The free version provides enough features to get by on, but I can see the Premium+ being worth the expense, depending on your needs.

Overall, the things I love about this litterbox easily outshine the issues. For me, the odor control is so amazing that that feature alone makes it worth the purchase. Considering all the other functions the PETKIT Purobot Ultra offers, I would happily recommend this box to all the cat owners I know.

The PETKIT Purobot Ultra is one of the least labor-intensive litter boxes I have ever tested. In the last six-plus weeks of using it, I have done almost nothing to maintain it. I’ve added litter a few times and taken out the pre-sealed waste bags three times. Beyond that, I haven’t touched the unit itself.

Because the unit handles all the scooping itself and features a huge waste compartment, the only real labor required of you is to initiate the packing process when the waste bag is full. This literally involves pressing a single button twice.

From there, the PETKIT seals the bag with an internal heat sealer and then pops the compartment open so you can grab it. Once the bag is removed, the box will reset itself, engage a new waste bag from the internal bag ring, and continue maintaining the litter box without any input from you.

My one-year-old cat, Makoa, is no stranger to CBD oil. He has helped me test numerous CBD products over his short life. We’ve found plenty that helped calm him down and some good options for supporting his immune system.

I was excited to test this product from Honest Paws because, not only is it made just for cats, but it is marketed to support overall kitty health.

Makoa suffered from numerous respiratory infections when he was a kitten, leaving him with a goofy eye and a propensity for repeat infections. I was hopeful that the Well CBD Oil Tincture for Cats could help strengthen his immune system while reducing inflammation to keep these repeat episodes at bay.

For the last three weeks, I have been adding this tincture to his breakfast each day. In that time, I’ve noted many things I like about this product as well as a few downsides.

What I Like

As I researched this oil, I found a number of things to love about it.

For one, it is USDA-certified organic. The hemp they use comes from organic hemp farms in the USA, which means you don’t have to worry about exposing your cat to pesticides or other chemical impurities.

Another thing I like about Honest Paws is that they use full-spectrum hemp oil in their tinctures. Unlike CBD isolate, these oils have a host of helpful compounds that enhance the effects of CBD, including minor cannabinoids.

Of course, full-spectrum products also contain THC, which can be problematic for pets. Luckily, Honest Paws ensures all of their oils fall under the 0.3% max THC content that vets recommend. In fact, third-party lab tests have confirmed that their cat oil only contains about 0.011% THC.

All the great compounds in this product are protected by MCT oil. MCT is a great carrier oil option for cats because it is easy to digest and highly palatable thanks to its neutral flavor.

Given the pure, quality ingredients used in this product, I felt safe giving it to Makoa every day. He happily eats it up along with his breakfast each morning. Given the large dose recommended and the lack of added flavors, I didn’t even attempt to put this on a treat or give it to him directly.

I first noticed results about two weeks in. The discharge from his eyes seemed to decrease and has continued to improve over the last week. His temperament has also changed, with more cuddling sessions and fewer issues with sudden aggression, which he is prone to.

These benefits came without any drawbacks. The oil hasn’t caused any noticeable side effects and, despite his sensitive tummy, he hasn’t had any diarrhea or other digestive issues from the added oil.

Where I See Room for Improvement

There is plenty to like about this product, but I also encountered a few drawbacks.

First, the concentration of CBD is fairly low. There is only 4.2 mg of CBD per dropper. This means that, to get a therapeutic dose for a 10-pound cat, you would need to give more than one dropper full. Since cats can be finicky about eating oily things, this could cause some issues.

Even at the recommended dose of one dropper, you’re still adding a decent amount of oil to your cat’s diet. My cat had no problem eating it all when I mixed it with his food, but there is no way I could have dripped that much onto a treat if I needed something more enticing.

One minor complaint I have is that the pipet for this product is made of plastic. This isn’t horribly problematic, but oils like hemp can break down plastic over time. And, given the price point on this product and the quality of it, I would have  it to have a glass dropper.

That said, plastic droppers are a safer option if you plan to squeeze the oil straight into your cat’s mouth. I would also point out that the low concentration of this product does make it an easier option to dose smaller cats and those who only require a minimal amount of CBD.

Overall, I’ve been very pleased with this product and the results I’ve seen so far. I think it’s an especially great option for owners looking to give a low daily dose of CBD to support their cat’s overall health.

What I Liked

This product works by changing how the bacteria in your cat’s mouth function. Bad bacteria eat sugar and starch and create plaque and acid—both very bad for teeth. The taste may be off-putting to some cats. Luckily, this formula is effective even at low doses. For super-picky cats, the “All Pet” formula might be a better choice as it’s designed for sensitive systems and kidneys, and picky palates.

Our Experience With the Messy Cats Interactive Slow Feeder

I have been looking for a slow feeder for my hungry cat, Makoa, for ages. He is a big foodie and loves to gobble up his food as fast as possible and then claim that he’s still hungry.

This is an extra problem since he also has pica, which means he likes to eat non-food items as well. Because of this, it’s even more important that he feel full after he eats.

A slow feeder is the perfect solution for his issues because it prolongs the eating process (giving him a healthy activity to engage in) while helping him feel fuller once he has finished eating. The problem is, not only does Makoa eat silicone, which most cat slow feeders are made of, but he also can’t smell very well.

I have tried a variety of specialty feeder options for him. The puzzle feeders don’t work because he can’t smell the food well enough to seek it out. And the silicone ones just end up becoming food themselves.

Luckily, the Messy Cats Interactive Slow Feeder has the perfect combination of features to work for my special little guy.

While this feeder does have some food-safe rubber on the sides, the food contact points are made of hard plastic that not even Makoa can chew. And unlike plastic feeder bowls made for dogs, the ridges on this one are shallow, which means even my nose-blind kitty can get all the kibbles out with relative ease.

While this bowl doesn’t cause any frustration, it still does a great job of slowing him down. He used to finish a bowl of kibble in about three minutes. Now it takes him at least ten. And often, he’ll take breaks in between.

This helps stretch meals out for up to an hour. Not only does this help entertain him, but it also seems to help him feel more satiated by the time he finishes.

I’ve noticed a significant decrease in his food seeking behavior since he got this slow feeder.

On my end, I love that this thing is dishwasher-safe and super easy to rinse off between washings. All the ridges are smooth, so there are no corners for food to get stuck in. There isn’t even a gap between the plastic and rubber edge, which means food can’t accumulate there, either.

The size of this bowl is about perfect for the amount of food Makoa gets each meal. However, if he got any more, things would get messy fast.

Even with just feeding ¼ cup of dry food for dinner, a few kibbles end up on the counter around the feeder. This doesn’t bother me too much since it only adds to the time it takes him to eat everything, but owners trying to keep a cleaner home might see this as a downside.

But my biggest complaint about this dish has to do with the suction cups.

These cups are super strong and do a great job of keeping the bowl in place during feeding. This is especially true if you’re using it on a hard, smooth surface like granite or tile. But this suction doesn’t last long on any surface.

After about ten minutes, the suction cups release. This isn’t a huge deal since they also act as an effective anti-slip device. But for smart cats, it wouldn’t take much to lift the entire bowl up and dump the food out.

For me personally, not having the suction cups stay engaged means I have to be careful to put this bowl away between feedings so Makoa doesn’t carry it off and use it as a chew toy.

But overall, this slow feeder has been a big win for my household. I have been and will continue to use it for Makoa at every meal. He seems to enjoy the challenge of getting all the food out and I love that it gives him some quality enrichment while helping him feel fuller.

1. Air Dried, Grain-Free Cat Food

Love, Nala originally started out with a traditional dry kibble offering. They have since replaced their kibble with only air-dried cat food. In my opinion, this was the right move.

Air-dried foods are more nutritious since they don’t undergo heat processing, which deactivates enzymes and destroys many sensitive nutrients. Food that is air-dried retains nearly the same nutritional profile as dehydrated and freeze-dried foods.

Compared to dry kibble, Love, Nala air-dried foods contain three times as much moisture. This is key since most house cats do not drink enough water to offset dry kibble diets. By feeding food with more moisture in it, you can help protect your cat’s kidneys and urinary tract from infection and disease.

Love, Nala air-dried food is available in three flavors, all of which contain high amounts of protein and feature real meat ingredients at the top of the ingredient list.

The food pieces are a bit larger than traditional kibble and can sometimes be stuck together. But adult cats and larger kittens should have no problem with this food.

My cat was very taken by the smell (though it isn’t overly stinky) and was quick to pick this food out of his old kibble while I was transitioning him over to his new diet.

2. Canned Food in Broth

Love, Nala canned food comes in two varieties, pate and flakes. Both options contain a lot of extra moisture in the form of broth or gravy. This is intentional to help ensure your cat gets enough liquid to keep those kidneys working properly.

In addition to a higher moisture content than other canned foods, these diets also have a lot more protein than you’ll typically find. Wild cats’ diets consist of large amounts of protein and a decent amount of fat.

These Love, Nala diets were made to imitate these natural diets while still taking into consideration the typical lifestyle of pet cats. This means that they contain high amounts of protein to help form lean muscle and support health but only moderate amounts of fat to better control weight.

There are a number of recipes to choose from which makes it easy to find something every cat will enjoy. And since these recipes were created to please a very picky eater (looking at you, Nala) you can bet they will win even the most discerning of cats over.

My cat is a huge fan of these wet foods. And I am happy to report that they smell a lot better than most canned cat foods I’ve tried. They have an odor, but it smells fresher than most and doesn’t linger.

These supplements come in an easy-to-feed chew that is designed to be highly palatable. You won’t have to fight with your cat to get them to eat these supplements!

The key to that palatability is in the enticing ingredients, like animal plasma, chicken, and chicken liver flavor. Each little triangular-prism-shaped chew is soft and just stinky enough to get your cat’s attention.

Dosing is easy, too. Cats under 10 pounds get one chew while big cats get two.

My cat looks forward to his Digestive and Skin & Coat chews every morning. I have already seen a difference in both his litter box habits and his glossy fur since starting them.

4. Mousse Cat Treats

The treat offerings from Love, Nala aren’t your typical dry cat treats. Instead, they are highly palatable, mousse-textured squeeze tubes.

Using this delivery method for tasty rewards has many benefits. For one, this mousse is high in moisture. As we talked about above, this is a good thing for house cats, since they have a high incidence of kidney disease.

The texture is also very pleasing and enticing to many cats, especially those who aren’t interested in standard treats.

Our Experience With Love, Nala

My cat, Makoa, is a big fan of food. In fact, he likes eating so much that he will occasionally eat things that aren’t food. His most recent foray into not-food was when he chowed down on my daughter’s rubber dinosaur.

To help curb this strange habit, I’m always on the lookout for nutritious, high-protein cat diets that will help fill him up and satisfy his lust for food without adding to his weight. Given Love, Nala’s high protein and lower fat content, and many recipe options, I thought it might be a good choice for Makoa.

I ordered their Turkey & Chicken Air-Dried food, Tuna with Spinach Recipe Pate, Chicken Flaked with Sweet Potato & Tomato Recipe, Digestive and Skin & Coat supplements, and a sampling of their Mousse treats.

As soon as I started mixing the foods into Makoa’s meals, it was clear how he felt about them. He immediately began picking out the air-dried morsels from his typical dry food. And he is a huge fan of both canned food recipes.

I like that neither the dry food nor canned food has an intense odor. I actually stopped feeding wet food for a long time because the smell would linger in the house for hours after mealtime. That has not been an issue at all with Love, Nala.

The supplements have also been a big hit with Makoa. He happily eats them up before even starting on his food in the morning. This is a very good thing because we all know how hard it is to pill a cat!

After just a couple of weeks on these supplements, I have already seen results. Despite his sensitive stomach, Makoa did not have any issues switching diets, which I attribute to the digestive supplement. His fur is also noticeably softer and glossier since starting the Skin & Coat chews.

I was very hopeful that Makoa would be obsessed with the Mousse so I could use it to teach him a few tricks. While it doesn’t have Churu appeal, he does like it and the texture makes it easy to use in training. But mostly I have been adding it as a treat/supplement to his meals.

I am a big fan of the protein content of these foods and the whole-food ingredients used in the recipes. And I love that they use air-dried food as it has so many benefits for cats.

There is a lot to like about the offerings from Love, Nala. They have a huge variety of recipe options and obviously put care into selecting their major ingredients. But I think there is still something to be desired here.

The long list of added nutrients would indicate that the whole foods used aren’t providing enough nutrition to meet minimal values. This is not at all uncommon in the pet food industry. But it also isn’t optimal since synthetic vitamins and minerals are not nearly as well absorbed as naturally occurring nutrients.

I also found the price of the canned food to be a bit high compared to the competition. The other offerings are more in line with Love, Nala’s goal of providing affordable healthy food. The air-dried food is very reasonably priced for what it is, as are the supplements.

Overall, though, I have been very impressed with this company. My cat definitely loves eating all of these products, including the supplements. I have noticed an increase in his energy and improvement in his body condition since starting him on Love, Nala.

What I Liked

My pets are lucky that I get to spend most days working at home. But this summer also saw me and my husband leaving the house quite a bit for vacations. We wanted a way to keep an eye on our cat and two dogs while we were away and decided to give the WaggleCam Pro a try.

It was important for us to find a cam that would work well for a cat since Makoa is definitely the pet in our house that needs to be watched most closely. The fact that the WaggleCam Pro has strong suction cups to keep it stable, but can also be easily moved around as needed, was a big selling point for us. As was the 360-degree swivel camera.

It took no time at all to get this camera set up. It connected to our wifi very quickly without any issues, which isn’t always the case with these high-tech pet products. I opted to try the subscription option since we had a vacation coming up.

We tested it for a few days before leaving for our trip. Checking the camera quickly became a daily routine for our family while we were gone.

One major advantage of this camera over other pet cams is the 360-degree rotation. This became a must for Makoa since he spent most of the time sitting right next to the camera on the window sill. While this is unlikely to be an issue for most cat owners, those of us with pica cats know that rubber is always a dangerous material. My cat loves to chew on rubber and swallow pieces of it whole. Before I set this camera out, I made sure to cut this tab off.

I also wish the treat reservoir was a little bigger. I was able to get enough treats in it to last our three pets through a long weekend, but any longer than that and the pet sitter would have needed to refill it.

Most of the issues that I found, however, had to do with the app.

This app was easy to set up and very intuitive. But it also takes a while to load each time it opens. It has also, on many occasions, caused my phone to freeze, sometimes for minutes at a time.

After dealing with this multiple times I finally started force quiting the app after each use. This seems to help avoid phone performance issues.

I imagine these issues will be fixed with future software updates, so they definitely aren’t a deal breaker for me.

Overall, I have been very pleased with this pet camera. I plan to switch to the free version during months when we will be home most days. But the subscription option is certainly worth it for those times when we are out of town and our pets are home with the pet sitter.

For anyone who has read my reviews before, you’re probably familiar with my problematic kitty, Makoa. He has a condition called pica, which means he likes to snack on inedible objects, which occasionally lands him at the emergency vet.

To help reduce how much access he has to things he might decide to eat when no one’s looking, we have to lock him in the laundry room overnight. He has a comfy setup with plenty of toys, snacks, and a plush bed.

But as summer crept in, it became clear that leaving the window open in there wasn’t going to be enough to keep him cool overnight. That’s when I started seeking out a comfortable, cooling bedding option for him.

The Zonli Pet Cooling Mat was perfect for the space and had me very hopeful that Makoa would be more comfortable overnight, even on those sweltering evenings.

There is no question about which side of this mat features the cooling technology. The instant I set my hand on the silky fabric, I could feel the chill. It’s a weird sensation because, unlike silk and other cool-touch fabrics, that coldness remains apparent no matter how long I leave my hand on it.

I knew this would be perfect for Makoa to use overnight. But first, I let him test it out around the house.

He was definitely attracted to the feel of it and sat on it no matter where I put it. The only issue we encountered was that my Chihuahua, Papyrus, also thought it looked like a great place to nap!

As usual, I’d love it if they offered more color choices, as well.
